The Grande Ronde River once flowed around our small community, creating an island. Eventually, the course of the river was redirected. The island was lost, but the name stuck.
Ride through town on the Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway, or stay awhile and join in the fun of our Hog Wild Days, a popular local celebration, with a large flea market, parade, and fireman’s pancake breakfast, held in early June.
Next door to La Grande, Island City has attracted many businesses and manufacturing companies that serve Eastern Oregon. The town began in 1872 as a business center dedicated to flour production. Island City was incorporated in February 1904, and the document of incorporation was signed by Ulysses S. Grant.
